During the first half of the 20th century, Alaska was a place of adventure, a place where people could "stake their claims."
That rustic style proved to be the magnet for Don Abel, a farm boy from Iowa, who moved north to the Southeast port city of Juneau in the early 1930s.
"My grandfather came to Alaska from Iowa at the age of 15 with a fifth-grade education," says Abel's grandson Bruce Abel. "He was tired of the farm and wanted to go to Alaska for adventure."
