Stricter control over elephant-back safaris and a ban on the "green" hunting of elephants are among the wide-ranging regulations contained in the government's draft policy document, National Norms and Standards for the Management of Elephants, published this week.

The government wants to streamline the management of elephants, which was previously done either by national park managements or provincial authorities. The focus is now on the management of ecosystems rather than on the management of the species.
