Feb. 28--Two hundred years ago this week, the intrepid explorer Zebulon Montgomery Pike moved into a new phase of his expedition to Southern Colorado, setting out for Santa Fe in the company of 100 Spanish soldiers.

Whether he was under arrest or being rescued is a question that echoes through Pike's journals. Pike and his men had been through a bitter winter, trudging through the Sangre de Cristo mountains in deep snow, seemingly always on the brink of starvation.
