Feb. 27--The sunflower star is the overachiever of the sea star world.
Where most sea stars have five to 14 "arms," or rays, the sunflower has 15 to 26. (The older they are, the more rays they have.) The sunflower star is the race horse of Pacific Northwest sea stars with its ability to cover more than 40 inches a minute in pursuit of its prey.
