One of John Shea's friends says he may not be Catholic but he's what Catholics will be 30 years from now. Shea laughs at such backhanded compliments. He is as relaxed as Buddha's belly, although he did protest that he is thoroughly Catholic. It's just that Shea stretches much the way the late Thomas Merton stretched. Like Merton, he tries to understand the human person from a spiritual point of view, not as a curriculum. He goes where his soul takes him in search of graces without bar codes.
