THOUGH it may be as mystifying to foreigners as cricket or the finer points of class, pantomime is a perennial feature of Christmas in Britain. Up and down the country, from mid-December to mid-January, scores of local theatre companies cavort through the traditional tales in the traditional manner.

The pantomime canon embraces such children's classics as "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Aladdin". Invariably, their hero is the "principal boy", who is acted by a shapely young woman in form-fitting tunic and hose. Her mother--or some other ...
