Atherstone held its 809th annual Shrove Tuesday Ball Game yesterday honouring a celebrated tradition of "anything goes".

The bizarre festivities originate from the times of King John, where surfs would celebrate their day off before Lent by throwing a pig's bladder around town.

Nowadays a Committee regulates the activities which often end in broken noses and black eyes as around 2,000 people swarm to the centre's Long Street.
