Feb. 17--Dr. Carter Woodson in 1926 initiated the annual February observance of Negro History Week.

He chose February for the observance because Feb. 12 is Abraham Lincoln's birthday and because Feb. 14 is the accepted birthday of Frederick Douglass.

By the 1970s, Negro History Week had expanded to become Black History Month.

As we celebrate the milestones and momentum of a people targeted for massacres, murders and mayhem, we must pause to acknowledge the maturation of Africans in America.
