In 1936 Christina Stead, a young Australian living and writing in New York, was described as "the most extraordinary woman novelist produced by the English-speaking race since Virginia Woolf." The occasion of this extravagant praise (by Clifton Fadiman in The New Yorker) was the publication of Stead's third book, a now largely forgotten novel titled The Beauties and Furies.
