ATTACK can be the best form of defence, in politics if not the law. On February 12th Ma Ying-jeou, chairman of Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), was officially charged with corruption. The same day, he declared himself a candidate for the island's presidency in next year's election.
