Valentine is the name of a saint who was martyred near Rome on February 14 in the year 270 - under the persecution of Claudius II.

Valentine was jailed for marrying soldiers and their lovers in defiance of Claudius's edict that his warriors remain single in order to be better fighters.

Valentine was arrested and imprisoned - befriended the jailer's daughter and left her a note signed "from your Valentine" prior to his execution.
