TULA, RUSSIA--The new museum director of Yasnaya Polyana, the country estate of Russia's greatest novelist, brings more than a cascade of ideas to revitalize the faded cultural shrine. He also brings the family name. Vladimir Tolstoy,
31, Leo Tolstoy's great-great grandson, struggled for two years to rescue the 1,000-acre property from the carelessness of Soviet bureaucracy and the crude schemes of the new Russia. With the backing of Tolstoy kin from around the world and eventually from the Russian Ministry of Culture, he won the directorship four months ago.
