Medical sponges and bandage rolls in the U.S. utilized more than 950 million square yards of woven and nonwoven fabrics in 1993. Woven cotton gauze still holds the major share of this market, but penetration of nonwovens is increasing. Spunlaced blends of rayon and polyester staple continue as the major type of nonwoven replacing gauze, although the recent introduction of three cotton and polyester blend sponges based on new "Miratec" technology by Johnson & Johnson indicates a potential trend away from rayon staple.
