IT'S hard to believe that theidyllic Bay of Islands town of Russell was once known as ''the hell-hole of the Pacific''. The town was originally Kororareka (which translates as ''how sweet is the penguin'') and it provided a safe anchorage for sailors, whalers and sealers in the Far North.
