While the Biblical allusions in Brigit Pegeen Kelly's astonishing poetry are impossible to ignore, critics give them sharply divergent readings. Introducing To the Place of Trumpets, James Merrill describes Kelly as an innocent heretic, and argues: "Thanks to [Kelly's imagination] we can feel this Christian story--which has weighed so painfully upon the world for centuries--at last breaking down, granite to schist, leaving only the odd recalcitrance of a phrase or the fractured mica-flash of an ancient image" (1988, xi).
