Members of the Manila City Council officially turned Baseco in Tondo into a special industrial zone, the first and only one within Metro Manila.

Through a resolution ratified by the council, the Baseco area within the jurisdiction of Manila is now classified as a special economic zone.

Sixth District Councilor Greco Belgica, author of the resolution, said the reclassification of the area is in accordance with the provisions of Republic Act 7916, the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995.
