Many means of coerced labor typical of early labor systems in South America could be found in the Sur del Lago zuliano area of Venezuela between 1880 and 1936. Despite paternalistic labor laws, the areas remoteness and shortage of labor resulted in corrupt debt peonage and the enslavement of Indians imported from other regions. Land owners controled the law in the area, allowing such abuses to take place.
