National Gallery spotlights famed artist's etchings and drawings.

WASHINGTON _ Dignitaries, close friends and fellow artists found their way into the work by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669).

But the famed artist didn't settle for just any sitter. A personal connection with his subject was important to him. Only then could he bring out an individual distinctness _ especially in his drawings or etchings.

Few artists have mastered atmospheric mood and emotive power through drawing than Rembrandt. And a singular exhibition, on view here at the National Gallery of Art through March 18, bears this out.
