At the head of State Street is a statue everyone knows. There, on the Capitol Square, is the ruddy old statue of "Forward," one hand forever raised, one foot stepping hopefully ahead. Few probably read all the way through the plaque on its base.

It says, "FORWARD -- WISCONSIN WOMEN'S MEMORIAL OF THE COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION -- 1893."
