Those glossy sales catalogs - the kind that gleam with full-color renderings of crystal glasses or begonias, safari hats or exercycles - are the favored reading material for many people, those who like to buy and those who simply fantasize.
With that in mind, a Connecticut entrepreneur, Jay Walker, is making what is believed to be the most concerted effort ever to develop a mass market for the catalogs themselves. If Walker has his way, Americans will soon be buying catalogs much as they buy magazines.
