In the weeks before the opening of the Cairo population conference, the tone of the Vatican attack became increasingly shrill. The conference was described as promoting homosexual unions, promiscuity, abortion as a woman's right and a coercive imposition of birth control upon poor countries by the affluent West.

Particularly startling to many delegates supportive of the conference were the reports in mid-August that the Vatican had been conducting diplomatic outreach to fundamentalist Islamic regimes, such as Iran and Libya, seeking a conservative Catholic-Muslim ...
