As summer arrived in 1837, ignorance and indifference were the trail markers throughout the uncharted territory of northern New York.

Most people thought the Catskill Mountains contained the state's tallest peaks. Even New York's geologists considered Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid to be the highest point. Nobody had yet located the uppermost source of the Hudson River. And what we now know as the Adirondacks didn't even rate a name.
