The cradle song in August Strindberg's 'Fadren' provides an important key to a play in which fatherhood in the person of the Captain, the protagonist of the play, is shown to be a fraud. The father and patriarchy in general are exposed as props or masks. Taking it one step further, life is facsimile, nothing is genuine, everything is facade. The action of the play moves both from and towards childhood, with the Captain yearning to return to the primitive world which preceded symbol.
