The last time director John Avildsen had a chance to work on a sequel, he turned it down flat.
The story, he said, was the same as the original and wasn't going anywhere. The movie was "Rocky," and the sequel's made more money than the yearly gross national product of most countries.
John Avildsen now sees sequels with a new enthusiasm. The prints of "Karate Kid" were barely dry when he and scriptwriter Robert Kamen started to flesh out "Karate Kid II."
