The last time a New York City politician was blamed for doing more profiteering than governing, jaunty playboy Mayor James J. Walker was in office and Tammany Hall corruption was rampant.

A series of investigations conducted by Judge Samuel Seabury ultimately led to the resignation of Walker on Sept. 1, 1932, the biggest scandal in New York City until the one that resulted in convictions Tuesday of four men, including Bronx Democratic boss Stanley Friedman.
