SARATOGA SPRINGS - Towering American elms once lined Broadway and Union Avenue, shading the city's major boulevards and giving the city that postcard look that dominated small-town America.
But Dutch elm disease wiped away that scene as elm after elm succumbed, leaving just a few in Congress Park, on Broadway and around downtown. The trees were among the 100 million elms killed by the disease, according to the Elm Research Institute in Keene, N.H.
