Pat Green's Oct. 7 letter cites the dangers of older, wooden fire escapes and their potential to fail under fire conditions.
Safe means of egress from buildings on fire is the fundamental difference between life and death. I am perplexed that conditions, as described by Green, have not been previously addressed by appropriate code changes.
