Even Granville Hicks never could have imagined the edgeless, centerless suburbs that mark so much of modern American life. Countless small towns have been drawn and quartered or swallowed up whole by development strip malls and discount box stores, interstate highways and new housing tracts appended strangely upon the landscape.

Nor could Hicks have imagined how this shoe, this shirt, this clock would be made in China, Taiwan or Indonesia rather than in, say, Brockton, Troy or Bristol.
