Q: There is a famous poster of Uncle Sam pointing a finger saying, "I want you for the U.S. Army." Who was the artist, and who sat for the painting?

A: The artist and model is James Montgomery Flagg (1877-1960). Flagg created the self-portrait for the front cover of the July 1916 issue of Leslie's magazine. Later it was used for everything from military recruitment posters to advertising campaigns. Flagg created at least 45 other patriotic posters, but none as famous as this one. The costume used by Flagg in the painting sold at auction a few years ago for $21,850. ...
