A finding of intent is often required in criminal law, yet analysis of the philosophical problem of 'other minds' suggests that inferences concerning intent are often unfounded. Statutes concerning motive crimes, such as hate-crime statutes or the proposed Violence Against Women Act, are even more troubling in the tenuous inferences they require.
