The Western landscape and the power of myth intersect in the paintings of Jeffery S. Bird, a Lane Community College art instructor who has a show opening tonight at the Springfield Museum.

Images of wild elk, free flowing rivers, mountains and trees combine with snatches of text in his work. Bird, who goes by his initials, J.S., adopts a Whitmanesque tone when he talks about his painting.

``I endeavor to create images that sing of the beauty of the world,'' his resume begins.
