THE COMPETITION tried but failed to check the prime-time steamroller that is "American Idol," which begins its sixth season at 8 tonight on Fox.

Since "Pop Idol" was imported from the United Kingdom in the summer of 2002 and re-christened "American Idol: The Search for a Superstar," opposing networks have sent 24 shows against the series, which regularly attracts 30 million-plus viewers.

One of the shows was "I'm Still Alive" on UPN.

In 2004, it was more dead than alive.
