Fernando of Cordova is one of those men whose great abilities should have guaranteed great achievements and an enduring fame, instead of the narrow career and obscurity that became his lot.

Born in the mid-1420s and possibly trained at the University of Salamanca, Fernando first bursts into view in 1444, when his precocious academic, intellectual, and linguistic attainments were given a gushing recommendation by Lorenzo Valla.
