Telephoto lenses are used to obtain an image size larger than would be possible using a shorter lens at the same subject distance. Telephoto lenses have a fixed focal length as opposed to the variable focal length of zoom lenses. They have much less complex construction and if only one focal length is considered, a telephoto is much less expensive and has a larger maximum aperture than a zoom lens providing the same focal length. Some telephotos have focal lengths greater than even the longest zoom lens.
