``I think it's a lot tougher to be in music than in medicine.''

That's an unexpected statement to come from a physician, but Richard Balsam is no ordinary doctor. An internist and cardiologist who has maintained an Albany-based practice since 1969, he is also a trained pianist and an important patron of numerous local music organizations. In addition, he produces his own concert series, Renaissance Musical Arts, and counts as close friends many of the finest professional musicians of the Northeast.
