AMERICAN

Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates (1727-1806)

Gates was known as ``Granny'' by his men. Born into a lower-middle-class family in England, he secured a commission in the British Army, eventually resigning and settling in what is now West Virginia. Gates joined the American Army at the start of the Revolution. Skilled at playing the political game of generals, he was named to replace Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler. Gates led the American Army north to the Saratoga, where he was commander of the forces facing Burgoyne, and accepted the British surrender.
