Wit and zaniness are the beacon for hilarity in William Monahan's ``Light House'' (Riverhead Books; 223 pages; $13).

It's laugh-out-loud eccentricity as Monahan's protagonist, Tim Picasso, is turned down for an arts grant and turns to crime as his only alternative to make some money. Drug smuggler Jesus Castro employs Picasso to run drugs from Miami to Boston. But a $1.5 million payment by the Irish Republican Army that is supposed to go to Castro ends up with Picasso. What's a poor, starving artist to do?
