LIBERTY, ELLIS ISLANDS OPEN AGAIN.(CAPITAL REGION)
|
Byline: DIEGO IBARGUEN Associated Press
NEW YORK -- The first boatload of tourists arrived at Liberty Island as the icon of American freedom reopened Thursday morning for the first time since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Liberty Island and Ellis Island, which also reopened Thursday, are just across New York Harbor from where the World Trade Center's twin towers once stood.
While visitors will be welcomed to Liberty Island, the statue itself will remain closed for security reasons at least until 2002, according to the National Park Service.
