ANISE RICH IN LICORICE TASTE.(FOOD)
|
Byline: LISA STEVENS Staff writer
Dating back to at least the 1500s, anise was used for its medicinal powers. Ancient Romans served anise cakes after a rich meal to help digestion. Anise seed was during the Middle Ages for the same reason and it is still used that way in India, says Jill Norman, author of ``The Complete Book of Spices,'' (Viking 1990).
Anise is grown in many parts of the world. It is native to Southeast Asia and the islands of the Mediterranean, and is popular in Southeast Asian cuisine. Chinese cooks are more likely to use star anise than ...
