One hundred and seventy-five years ago, when it was officially opened, the Erie Canal spurred what might be considered the e-commerce revolution of its day.

The 363-mile, 40-foot-wide and 4-foot-deep ``artificial river'' with 83 locks and 18 aqueducts altered New York state's economy -- and the nation's -- practically overnight while changing long-held verities of business.

For instance, the cost of transporting a ton of wheat dropped from $100 pre-Erie to about $5 a ton with the canal.
