In 1835, Frank Hart was born on a part of Columbia Street that no longer exists in downtown Albany. Though Hart lived just a short walk from the State Street abode of fictional characters created by contemporary author Henry James, and the Albany haunts of the real Legs Diamond written about by William Kennedy, Bret Harte, as he later called himself, never wrote about his birthplace.
