In 1874, a Methodist minister from Alabama and a Methodist layman from Ohio joined forces to found a New York state cultural phenomenon: the Chautauqua Institution. The two men planned a summer study conference to instruct Sunday School teachers and others in a range of liberal arts subjects, as well as in Methodism. They chose an old revival meeting ground, ``Fair Point,'' on the shore of Lake Chautauqua -- about 50 miles south of Buffalo -- for the conference site.
