POLLS IN NEED OF OVERHAUL VARIETY OF FACTORS CAUSE RESULTS TO BE ERRATIC.(PERSPECTIVE)

The polls are in agreement: This might be the closest presidential election since 1960. And yet those same polls have shown wildly divergent results in the White House race.
Just two days after the first debate between Al Gore and George W. Bush, a Gallup poll for CNN/USA Today whipsawed from an 11-percentage-point lead for the vice president, to a 7-percentage-point margin favoring the Texas governor.
At the same time, a Reuters/MSNBC survey didn't find a Bush lead at all. It placed Gore ahead by 4 percentage points.
