1. Fino ai primi decenni del Cinquecento, il Petrarca meglio conosciuto in Europa fu lo scrittore latino. Fuori d'Italia, nel Trecento e nel Quattrocento, Francesco Petrarca apparve soprattutto l'autore di trattati spirituali o polemici, o l'autore di Epistulae latine raffinatissime, in prosa e in versi; come poeta, l'opera sua piu apprezzata fu l'incompiuto poema Africa.
