Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence, is by definition a disease. Dependence on alcohol is marked by a progressive, chronic course; the effects of alcohol on the body have a predictable pattern and symptoms inherent unto itself. Similarly, one's risk of becoming alcoholic is influenced by genetic and lifestyle traits. In alcohol dependence, cravings can become as strong as those for food or water, and sadly, an alcohol-dependent person will continue to consume alcohol despite the negative repercussions on their health, career, and family.
