A su llegada a Milán, en 1482, el pintor, músico e inventor Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci llevaba en mente un objetivo muy claro: deslumbrar al duque Ludovico Sforza, "Il Moro", amante de la música, con el sonido de una lira de brazo fabricada en plata, con la forma del cráneo de un animal con cuernos en cuyo interior iban las cuerdas, según se pudo ver en un dibujo encontrado años después. El inusual instrumento cumplió su cometido, pues Sforza, entusiasmado, aseguró que tanto éste como el ejecutante superaban en mucho al resto de los músicos milaneses.
