Delicate, feathery, green ferns are an easy family of plants to grow in a partly shaded back yard. Many ferns are native to the Northeast and grow profusely in the wild.
The naturalistic, wild look of ferns makes them perfect backdrops for woodland plants that bloom in spring like bloodroot (Sanguinaria), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia), Wake Robin (Trillium) and woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata).
