CAVAN angler Derek Jermyn grassed the first Irish rod caught salmon of 2007 on the River Drowes, Co Leitrim.

His 6lbs fish was caught on a black Flying C on the Eel Weir stretch at 8.50am and a second fish also around 6lbs was taken from the Trout Pool below Lennox's Bridge at 2.00pm.

Conditions were cold, with hailstone showers as a total of four fish were caught on opening day of which two were returned alive to the water.
