NEW YORK -- Democratic congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy turned back a strong Republican challenge on Tuesday and pulled out a victory for a second term in the House.
Upstate, two Democrats targeted by the GOP, Reps. Maurice Hinchey and John LaFalce, easily coasted to re-election.
McCarthy, of Nassau County, who became a well-know gun foe after her husband was slain by a crazed gunman on the Long Island Rail Road, defeated Republican state Assemblyman Gregory Becker.
