ONCE Napoleon was got out of the way there were a few good Romantic painters who took up the slack in German painting, but one good painter who flourished through the middle of the period until the late eighties was Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885) who had, in addition, a sense of humour which was exceptional. He had all the usual faults and failures, taken from the all-over point of view imposed by modern tastes and standards, but he overcomes these with a belief in himself transferred to modern times.
